Peep,  our 5 lb. chihuahua rescued with bad legs and one eye. She had an appointment at VRC today and had x-rays taken, though they were limited because she was wiggly and having trouble breathing. At this time, there is nothing recommended for her legs. Her back legs have grade 4 luxating patellas, and the front leg appears to be a chronic issue that is not expected to improve but does not currently need intervention.

The surgeon believes Peep is likely around 8 years old, possibly older. Her trachea remains the most concerning of her medical issues right now. She has another appointment coming up, and we will see if steroids may help improve her airway while we continue managing her mobility. She is receiving lots of love and is very comfortable.

4/6/2026

Safe to say even with one eye, sore legs, and an upper respiratory infection, Peep is already settling in and feeling comfortable with her foster. She’s taking everything in stride, resting, and starting to decompress in a safe, cozy environment.

4/4/2026

Peep has had a rough start between her leg issues, one eye, and a sensitive remaining eye but she’s pushing through like a little champ. She also came in with an upper respiratory infection from the shelter, so she’s now on antibiotics and getting plenty of much needed rest while she continues to decompress and heal.

Peep had a good first night in foster. She has been started on eye medications for her remaining eye and is on gabapentin to help manage discomfort in her legs while she rests and decompresses ahead of her follow-up care and upcoming procedures.

She settled in beautifully, sleeping quietly in her crate within her foster’s play area setup. She felt safe and was able to rest comfortably through the night.

Peep was transported to VRC for evaluation, where we began addressing her most urgent concerns. Her remaining eye has been diagnosed with severe dry eye and is now being treated with medications and drops she will likely need for life. Our goal is to preserve her vision and keep her comfortable.

Peep also has mobility concerns, including suspected luxating patellas. We are closely monitoring her mobility. For now, she has been started on gabapentin to help with discomfort while we assess how she responds before considering an orthopedic consult. Given her tiny size, surgical intervention would be significant. We are leaning toward conservative management such as no stairs, no jumping, and a carefully supported lifestyle.

Peep is incredibly gentle and loving, just scared and unsure of the world around her. She’s safe now, and we’re going to do everything we can to give her the life she deserves.

Peep came into our care as an urgent intake as a tiny 5 lb chihuahua with a lot stacked against her. She has already lost one eye, and her remaining eye is in very rough condition; bulging, cloudy, irritated, and likely ulcerated. There is a real risk she could lose that eye as well.

She was incredibly scared on intake, visibly trembling, but she showed how sweet she is. During transport, she quickly began to settle and lean into comfort, showing she wants to trust.
