Animal control and intake

varies by county and township.

Animal control and intake procedures vary by county and municipality. Always start by contacting your local police department. They will dispatch the appropriate contracted animal control provider for your township.

  • Philadelphia residents should contact ACCT Philly.

• Delaware County does not have an open intake shelter. Contact your local police department (non-emergency) for direction.

• Chester and Montgomery Counties should contact local police for animal control guidance.

If you are unsure who to contact, you may contact Delco Dawgs. While we are NOT an open intake facility, we will do our best to help point you in the right direction.

Be sure to always approach stray animals slowly and with caution, using a calm and gentle voice to avoid increasing their fear. If appropriate, you may use food to encourage an animal to come closer. Avoid chasing, yelling, or startling the animal (especially near roadways) as this can cause them to panic and run into traffic, potentially resulting in serious injury.

File a FOUND pet report with ACCT Philly

http://www.acctphilly.org/found-a-pet/

The first thing you should do after finding a pet is contact ACCT Philly, Philadelphia's animal control shelter, to file a "Found Report". Be sure to give a detailed description of the animal and the exact area the animal was found. The staff will compare the report to all "Lost Reports" filed in the city to see if there is a match. You can contact ACCT Philly at 267-385-3800 or visit at 111 W. Hunting Park Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19140.

Check for identification tags and/or microchip. If they are chipped, be sure to update your Found Report with ACCT Philly. If you can provide the animal a temporary home until their owners are found or until a new home is lined up, great! It's best to keep the animal separate from your pets until it has had a proper vet wellness visit.
